Westboro Baptist Church Coming to Virginia Beach Area

Information has been received that members of the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), a religious extremist group known for protesting U.S. military funerals, are planning several protest activities in the local area.

The WBC is highly organized, has multiple members who are lawyers, and appears to seek confrontation in order to file lawsuits that result in monetary settlements used to fund church activities. To that end, WBC members will often video the protest event and any interaction with the public in an attempt to capture litigation opportunities. At past events, the group did not engage in violence when they were left alone; however, their provoking language and flag desecration are designed to incite a response and subsequent confrontation – do not allow yourself to be lured into their plan.

All personnel should avoid the WBC and their activities. If WBC members are present and avoidance isn’t an option, the best course of action is to completely ignore them.

The date and location of the protest activities are as follows:

- 12/01/2008: VA Beach, VA- Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base, Indep. & Shore.

- 12/03/2008: Virginia Beach, VA- Fort Story, 83rd & Atlantic

- 12/03/2008: Norfolk, VA- Norfolk Naval Station, Hampton Blvd & International Terminal Blvd

- 12/03/2008: Virginia Beach, VA- Oceana Naval Air Station, VA Beach Blvd & First Colonial

- 12/03/2008: Portsmouth, VA- Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, London Blvd & Effingham

- 12/03/2008: Yorktown, VA- USCG Reserve Training Center, GWM Highway & Main

If you have any questions or would like further information regarding the WBC, please contact the NMCP Police Department at 953-5223/5224.

What Ship Will Replace the Decommed JFK?

From NavyTimes

Navy to Release Mayport Report Soon

By Mark D. Faram – Staff writer
Posted : Tuesday Sep 30, 2008 17:30:06 EDT

The Navy’s top officer says the service is close to deciding which ships could end up at Naval Station Mayport, following the March 2007 decommissioning of the carrier John F. Kennedy.

“I think in the near term I’ll be getting … some good ideas as to what some of the options may be,” Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead told Navy Times reporters and editors Sept. 26.

“If we’re going to make decisions, we really need to look at what, strategically, what should our lay-down be and the staff has been working on that.”

Roughead’s comments come nearly six months after a Navy study outlined 13 options for basing ships in Mayport. The Navy released the options without giving a preference, but those options ranged from doing nothing to adding a nuclear-powered carrier and seven surface ships.

When the study began in 2006, the last full year of service for the Kennedy, 22 ships were based there, with 13,272 sailors calling the area home. The naval station lists 21 ships.

With no action, that number would drop to 11 ships and 9,290 sailors by 2014, with 10 of the 13 local frigates scheduled for decommissioning starting in 2010.

The final report is expected to be published early in 2009, Navy officials say.

Local politicians, concerned over a shrinking Navy population, are holding out hope for a nuclear carrier, which would require extensive construction to make the pier nuclear-capable.

All of the Navy’s East Coast carriers are based in Norfolk, Va., and lawmakers in that region have fought efforts to send a carrier to Mayport.

Coming Along

Our tree is up! Well, not the 7 foot nice one, the 2 foot tall mini-tree. We won’t be here for Christmas – we’ll be “home” for Christmas. Home being, with our families back in Florida. So, we’re only going to decorate a little this year. There’s just too much else to do really.

But! I’ve got a table in my dining room now! There’s only a corner with 2 boxes of Christmas decorations, the rest is free and empty! In fact, we actually ate lunch on this table today!! That’s a feat I’ll tell you! There are still boxes everywhere, but it’s becoming livable in here. It’s starting to feel like “home” although a couple nights ago I was sitting on the couch late at night watching some television and I looked around thinking, “where am I?” because this is so new to me. I get this every time we move to a new place though. Starting over to make the new house a home. I’ve got some candles up, but I can’t find my lighter. Think of it – I am a pro-candle seller and I can’t find my lighter. Sheesh …

I joined a playgroup :) I’ve only been to one event, but I really like the ladies in it. It’s a yahoo group called “VA Beach Mom’s.” I know that joining a playgroup or a “Moms” or “Wives” group is SUPER important. Heh, there’s an official tip from me to you!

I checked out the Dam Neck NEX today with hubby since he had to drop of some uniforms to be sewn and needed a haircut. He got his hair cut and Xander got his cut also. The lady at the Barbershop was awesome and very fast with them both. Alan says he’s had her before and liked her a lot. She even gave Xander a lollypop, which I thought was very nice. I picked up a couple local coupon books while I was there along with a “Parents” magazine that is also local. I’ve gotta check those out and plan our adventures here!

We will be going to the Hunt Club Farm in a couple days to check out the holiday stuff there. I hear there is a petting zoo and everything and that it’s currently free to get into the petting zoo (which it normally isn’t). Let me know if you run into “Free” while you are there!
