Commissary Gift Certificate Company Shuts Down

CertifiChecks Inc., the Dayton, Ohio, company that provided gift certificates to commissary customers since 2002, has ceased operations. The Defense Commissary Agency advises all holders of the company’s gift certificates not to use them. In an announcement on its Web site, www.certifichecks.com, the company advised holders to submit the gift certificates “for potential reimbursement” to CertifiChecks, Inc., Attn: Redemption Dept., 1435 Shoup Mill Road, Dayton, Ohio, 45414. “What has happened to CertifiChecks is similar to what is going on today with many businesses being adversely affected by the current economic downturn,” DeCA stated in an announcement on its Web site, www.commissaries.com. “Unfortunately, in this case the situation directly affects commissary customers.”

Defender’s Own

I just got a MySpace friend invite from one of the founders of a neat new community for military members and their spouses – Defender’s Own. The website has almost 2000 members listed and contains new-worthy information, photos and videos, blogs, events and so much more.

Here is some information off of their "About" page:

The United States military is one big family, and Defender’s Own is working to bring it closer together. Defender’s Own is a new place for you to connect and interact with friends and loved ones within the US military community, without having to deal with the spam and nonsense associated with other social networks. As a member of Defender’s Own, you will have the ability to communicate with a vast network of military connected individuals. For instance:

  • Defender’s Own users can build their personal network to include old battle buddies, family members, and new friends
  • Active duty members and their families can keep in touch using a variety of free services including video chat, message boards, photo uploads, and much more.
  • Recruits can find active duty mentors who provide valuable insight and advice about the military
  • Veterans can find post-military careers
  • Military families can connect with other military families, creating networks that are rooted in more than just similar wine tastes

Finally, Defender’s Own is committed to creating connections with military charity organizations, and working for the well being of our soldiers and veterans.

Defender’s Own is free to join and I think it looks like a great community for our military families. Go check out the community at the Defender’s Own website.
